Digging deeper into the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk

Iron Age hill-fort dwellers. Roman centurions - and their families. They all left conspicuous traces on the landscape of the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk. As did the great castle-builders who gave Monmouthshire more castles than any other county in Wales.

Later on the industrial revolution left its mark, from the Clydach Gorge in the west, to the Wye Valley in the east and Newport docks in the south.

What they've all left behind is an area with a diverse cultural heritage, perfect for any holiday in Wales. Heritage that's been preserved as carefully as the countryside that cradles it. Take Newport's Transporter Bridge. A century old and one of only seven remaining in the world.

The area's museums provide a glimpse into a fascinating history with an ensemble cast. Charles Rolls. William Wordsworth. JMW Turner. The Chartist John Frost. And a small sphere purporting to be Lord Nelson's glass eye.
