October Monmouthshire Walking Festival (Oct. 19th-28th)

Every October is the Monmouthshire Walking Festival, a fantastic event spanning the whole county. With all sorts of walks and activities it really is the best way to explore Monmouthshire with like minded people. 2012 Events are still being planned, but there will be around 30 walks and special interest events to take part in.

Its compact size yet incredibly diverse topography makes Monmouthshire a fantastic place to walk. The Wye Valley gorge contrasts with the pastoral landscape of the Usk Valley, and the coastal flats on the Severn Estuary provide wildly different walking terrain to the hills and ridges of the Black Mountains in the north.

The Monmouthshire walking festivals have been organised as part of the county's rural development programme. Chief among the aims are the promotion of walking as a reason to visit and for general healthy living. And if there's a chance to highlight the culture, wildlife and food of Monmouthshire, all the better. In fact, many walks are led by locals providing insightful commentary along the way.

As an example, here is a video about the fantastic first Walking Festival!
